Why Is My Pet Itching? A Vet's Guide to the Real Causes

Most chronic itching in dogs and cats comes down to three buckets: parasites (fleas top the list), environmental allergies (atopy), and food allergies. Secondary skin and ear infections then pile on and make everything worse.
Start with strict, year-round flea prevention for every pet in the house — even indoor cats. It rules out the single most common cause in one step.
Modern anti-itch medications (Apoquel, Cytopoint) work well but don't fix the underlying cause. Your vet's job is to find the driver so you don't chase symptoms forever.
